The intersection of religion and sexual orientation is a challenge for many. For some, it is an either/or dichotomy, that it is not possible for you to be gay and, in this case, Mormon. Listen to these young people share their experience of being both.

Morris Dees–Southern Poverty Law Center

I was fortunate to meet Morris Dees (pictured below) who founded the Southern Poverty Law Center with Joseph Levin in 1971.

According to their website, www.splcenter.org, “The Southern Poverty Law Center is a nonprofit civil rights organization dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry, and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of society.

The SPLC is internationally known for tracking and exposing the activities of hate groups. Our innovative Teaching Tolerance program produces and distributes – free of charge – documentary films, books, lesson plans and other materials that promote tolerance and respect in our nation’s schools.”

I strongly encourage you to go to their website for their free booklet, “Responding to Everyday Bigotry, SPEAK UP”. It is incredibly helpful especially given the uptick of bullying. Also, please consider donating to this organization as they have never backed down from a fight but they need our support.
